Case Study - labor - Casey

Casey is a 26-year-old woman you admit to a birthing room. She has been having labor contractions 45 seconds long and 3 minutes apart for the last 6 hours. She tells you she wants to have her baby naturally without any analgesia or anesthesia. Her husband is overseas in the Army and so he is not with her. Although her sister lives only two blocks from the hospital Casey does not want her called. She asks if she can talk to her mother on the telephone instead. As you finish assessing contractions, she screams with pain and shuts, "I'm doing everything I'm supposed to do! How much longer does this go on?"
