The fact that water on Earth can readily be found in all three states (solid, liquid, and gas) is in part a consequence of the fact that the triple point of water (T = 0.01 °C, P = 0.006 atm) falls within a range of temperatures and pressures found on Earth. Saturn's largest moon Titan has a considerable amount of methane in its atmosphere. The conditions on the surface of Titan are estimated to be P = 1.6 atm and T = -178 °C .As seen from the phase diagram of methane (Figure), these conditions are not far from the triple point of methane, raising the tantalizing possibility that solid, liquid, and gaseous methane can be found on Titan.
(a)What state would you expect to find methane in on the surface of Titan?
(b) On moving upward through the atmosphere the pressure will decrease. If we assume that the temperature does not change what phase change would you expect to see as we move away from the surface?
A layer of peat beneath the glacial sediments of the last ice age has a carbon-14/carbon-12 ratio that is 22.6% of that found in living organisms.
Presume that a 2.00-L metal bottle that contains air at 108K as well as 3.0 atm pressure is sealed off. If we inject 90.0mL of liquid helium and permit the entire system to warm to room temperature (25°C), define what is the pressure inside the bo..

what is the enthalpy change for converting 1.00 mol of ice at -50.0degc to water at 70.0degc? the specific heats of ice
The equilibrium vapor pressures of water at 25*C and 50*C are 3.16 kPa and 12.51 kPa, respectively. Consider a 1.00 L sample of air at 50*C, with 45% relative humidity, trapped in a rigid cylinder. Suddenly the temperature of the gas is reduced to..
