Not long after the abolition of slavery in the mid-nineteenth century, racism surfaced in legislation commonly called Jim Crow laws, which were intentionally designed to make it difficult for Black people to exercise their rights. Those laws, enacted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the former Confederate states, segregated people by race and made it all but impossible for Black southerners to vote or hold elected office, for example. White supremacy contributed to the United States' imperialist policies toward Latin America, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and its annexation15 of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
