Racism as a widespread social phenomenon10 arose in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries as European explorers went to populated lands that were previously unknown to them. There they encountered, and subsequently dehumanized, peoples who looked, spoke, and lived differently from Europeans. In European nations and their colonies, the construct of race was designed and used as a means of granting one group privileges based on their supposed inherent11superiority and keeping one or more other groups disadvantaged based on supposed inferiority.
