Locate an elder that you know and who would be willing to answer questions about themselves. You may use a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle or even a family friend. Interview this elder, capturing their answers to the questions below. You may also include additional questions as the conversation develops to clarify their responses or better capture the information they are trying to convey:

  1. What is your age and gender?
  2. What is your racial or ethnic background?
  3. What is your relationship with the individual performing the interview (you!)?
  4. Are you affiliated with any specific religious or cultural groups and, if so, which ones?
  5. How does your age/gender/religious affiliations, or racial or ethnic background affect your behaviors? Do you have any daily rituals or specific eating habits that result from your background or religion?
  6. Do you identify with any community-based groups or people that are similar to you?
  7. What is your educational background? What was your occupation? Has either your educational background or your occupation affect your behaviors (daily rituals, habits or the social groups you connect with in the community)?
  8. There may have been many historical events that have occurred in your lifetime. Did you ever feel one of these historical events directly impacted your life (either your perceptions, experiences, changes in behavior)? If so, in what ways? Were there any other events that significantly impacted your life (personal, work, family, etc.)?
  9. Overall, do you feel life gets easier as you age? Why or why?

Summarize the information you collected from your interview. Give examples of how each of the elements of diversity impact the elderly person's described behaviors, activities or overall life experience.
