Consider the following two-stage process at a small company that provides emergency road service to motorists. Subscribers call a number sta ed by a single service representative. Upon calling, subscribers typically wait 7 minutes before talking to the representative, with whom they usually spend 4 minutes. The representative then dispatches one of 10 service vehicles, for which there is usually no wait. Each service vehicle spends an average of 30 minutes on each service call, including the time it takes to travel to the subscriber (the return trip is not counted since it is part of the next service call).
