What is the specific problem with communication? My immediate supervisor has hired new workers, many of whom are significantly younger than her. She feels that she cannot relate to them due to their age, and as such avoids communicating with them as much as possible. This leads to unnecessary confusion and keeps my team from being on the same page. Does the problem represent an example of one of the communication barriers from the learning materials? Yes, this would be an example of an attitudinal barrier, and age is listed as one of the characteristics which is often subject to discrimination. Given that I am in between my supervisor and the new workers in age, I could work with human resources to develop strategies of communication for the diverse group of people I work with. By doing so, my supervisor could draw new ideas from people of various generational backgrounds and utilize our different strengths, instead of becoming stuck in a complacent culture where innovation is stifled in the face of discrimination.
