Kant's view of the human mind and human nature stands in sharp contrast to Descartes'. For Descartes, you know with complete certainty that you exist (merely by thinking), and you know with complete certainty (merely by thinking) what you are (a thinking substance). For Kant, on the other hand, you are split into a knowable you (how you appear to yourself) and an unknowable you (how you really are, as a thing in itself).

This means that there are truths about what you are, and what human nature is, that you can never know, because there are hard limits on human knowledge, and limits on what is even thinkable. Explain Kant's view. Do you think there is such a huge gap between appearance and reality here? Do you experience yourself this way, as split between a knowable you and an unknowable you? Is this a plausible view of human nature and the human mind?
