Refer to the textbook "Rethink Communication" by Bowdle (2019) and at least one other source in your discussion of the following questions:

  • What is a healthy definition of excellence in ministry?
  • When have you suffered from the effects of equating excellence with perfection?
  • What counsel would you give to a young ministry leader to help them start off right regarding excellence vs. perfection?

Bowdle states, "Excellence is about the expectation and mindset that you are going to maximize the team, tools, and resources God has given you" (Bowdle, 2019, p. 236). Excellence is not perfection. Excellence, for the believer, is faithfulness. So be faithful where God has you. Work hard, but don't expect perfection. After all, the core of our Christian faith is the belief that we couldn't be perfect and need a Savior to live the perfect life for us. Excellence is doing the best with what you have. As Bowdle states, excellence should be understood as faithful stewardship of what you have been given: your time, talents, and resources.
