Nursing Situation Tom is an 8-year-old Caucasian boy with no previous medical history. When I introduced myself to Tom and his family, I noticed that he appeared uncomfortable and was crying. After talking with Tom and his family, I learned that he was distressed about having surgery. Tom's family told me that he is usually very active and enjoys playing baseball, but recently, he has been less energetic and reluctant to participate in his baseball games. As a result, they brought him to the hospital. They mentioned that Tom had been experiencing abdominal pain for two days, as well as a loss of appetite, a fever of 102.3 (measured orally), nausea, and vomiting. Tom's laboratory results showed an increased white blood cell count. Further tests, including a CT scan and ultrasound, revealed an enlarged and inflamed appendix. Tom was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with appendicitis. He was then placed in the pediatric unit, where I met him and his family.
