Case Study: While most agreed that Tesla played an important role in transforming how consumers and the automotive industry viewed electric vehicles, it still faced monumental challenges. Its stated goal of increasing production from 50,000 vehicles per year to 500,000 per year by 2018 would require a level of execution that Tesla, with its history of missing production deadlines and negative cash flow from operations, would need to reverse. The Economist believed that "whatever the future of the car looks like, it will be tough to overturn the incumbents in a business where clever technology is only part of the equation."36 As if to confuse the issue even more, in June 2014, Tesla shocked the world by announcing that the company had decided to open source its patents. "Yesterday, there was a wall of Tesla patents in the lobby of our Palo Alto headquarters," Musk announced. "That is no longer the case. They have been removed, in the spirit of the open source movement, for the advancement of electric vehicle technology."37 Tesla was racing against the biggest car manufacturers and technology companies in the world to control the automotive market of the future.
