Case Study: Construct an artistic piece that reflects on deviance through two major perspectives - positivism and constructionism. When you think about deviance, ask yourself, "what am I trying to explain?"

The positivist and the constructionist perspectives are asking different questions regarding deviance. the central fact about deviance: it is created by society. I do not mean this in the way it is ordinarily understood, in which the causes of deviance are located in the social situation of the deviant or in "social factors" which prompt his action. I mean, rather, that social groups create deviance by making the rules whose infraction constitutes deviance, and by applying those rules to particular people and labeling them as outsiders. From this point of view, deviance is not a quality of the act the person commits, but rather a consequence of the application by others of rules and sanctions to an "offender." The deviant is one to whom that label has successfully been applied; deviant behavior is behavior people.

In addition to creating your work of art, you'll be writing a 2-3 page summary that explains what exactly your piece is and how it relates the deviance through positivism and constructionism.

Questions: Regarding the summary, you might want to consider addressing the following:

What did you make and why did you choose this medium?

What is your art depicting? And what, from the material, does this piece relate to - what concept/topic is it covering?

Briefly explain the concept/topic you've chosen. Why is this information significant to you and society as a whole?

Tip: Be sure to use appropriate terms and concepts from the text, and to wrap up your work with a concluding paragraph.
