Jane is an adolescent who was brought to see you for symptoms of significant depression and anxiety. As you start working with Jane, she discloses that she has always struggled with her gender and that she has come to accept that she identifies as a boy (she asks that you continue using the female pronoun, for now). Since childhood, she reports preferring activities, clothes, and toys that are traditionally associated with boys. However, she does not feel that she can even consider transitioning, as her parents are very conservative and she does not believe they will ever accept her if she lives as her authentic self. This has created a great deal of inner distress. What diagnosis is Jane likely struggling with?
