The CEO at Wichita County Health Center (WCHC) has to address its future strategy over the next five years. This plan needs to anticipate changes to the business and operating model, as well as the evolution of patient care over that time.

The CEO has a few managerial decisions to face. One scenario is for WCHC to align with Centura, under which specialist physicians would be sent to WCHC on a regular basis in exchange for contractual transfers of complex cases from WCHC to a Centura-owned hospital. A second is to hire additional nursing staff full-time, instead of continuing to pay high fees to an external staffing company.

  • For each of these two scenarios, what are the risks to WCHC's business model of the situation?
  • Which scenario will be most favorable for patients, and why?
