Choose an organization that you can focus on throughout this course. It can be the organization or department where you actually work, an organization you desire to develop in the future, or an existing organization in which you have an interest. It can be any type of organization, including for-profit, non-profit, ministry, small business, multinational, etc. This first assessment will become Part 1 of a four-part plan which you will develop throughout this course. This plan will follow the process outlined on page 45 of your text. The objective of these assessments is to allow you to engage in the process of strategic planning in the most practical and realistic way possible and make application of the materials.

Decide what approach you will take, either as a consultant or as the organizational leader engaging in the process of strategic planning. Then write a 3 to 3.5 page double-spaced paper that includes the following sections:

Background: describe the organization, providing an overview of the organization and the role you will assume within the organization.

Prepare to plan: Focusing on the chosen organization, give careful thought to and answer the following questions:

a. What are the new realities within this organization?

b. Why is strategic thinking necessary?

c. How, as a leader or consultant, will I gain commitment on behalf of the people within the organization?

d. What are the critical success factors in this particular case?

Develop an Ideal Vision: Once again, focusing on the organizational context give careful thought to and answer the following questions.

a. What impact do we want to make on society?

b. What is our purpose?

c. How will we know if we are successful?
