Case scenario:
You work as a support worker in a medical centre that provides support to individuals with disabilities as well as aged care clients. This centre is in the local community and is very busy. Staff have noticed that client participation numbers have dropped recently in the service programs. The staff responded by handing out survey and feedback forms to clients and other service users. These surveys and feedback forms ask the clients and other service users about the services that the centre provides. The surveys and feedback forms indicate that the clients are concerned about their privacy during group sessions and that individual interview rooms are not soundproof.
Some of the concerns were about how the comments in the group were made using inappropriate use of humour. As a result, the clients felt the humour was designed to denigrate them. They felt this left the interpretation of the information spoken in humour to be used as gossiping and passing on information that can influence the way other staff members interacted with clients. Staff response to this concern is about how they feel the clients might perceive them in being deliberate and hurtful.
You have been given the task of developing ways to identify concerns, collaborating about, and making changes to related policies, procedures, and practices.
Question 1. What are the possible legal consequences for the medical centre?
Question 2. What changes will result following the implementation of reviewed policy or procedures how do these changes reflect staff training and sound proofing interview rooms?
Question 3. What strategies could be used for you and your colleagues to be involved in the review?
