Air Quality: What's in Your Air and Why?

The goal of this exercise is to become familiar with an air quality information website, air quality terminology and air pollutants. Questions are worth 2 points each (questions with several parts are worth 2 points for each part) unless noted otherwise.

Hover over the "Air Now" tab to get the dropdown menu. Read these two pages: "About Air Now" and "How to Use this Site." Other pages on the drop down are interesting but optional.

Now click on "AQI Basics." Answer these question:

1-What does AQI stand for?

2-What are the Air Quality Index Values that are unhealthy for sensitive groups? (Note: each one corresponds to a color on the chart).

Now hover over "AQI and Health" again, click on "Ozone" and answer these questions:

2-How does ozone form?

3-What are its harmful effects on humans? On the environment?

Go back to the Airnow home page, hover over "AQI and Health" and click on particle pollution. Answer these questions:

4-What are they two sizes of the particles? How does each compare to the size of a human hair?

5-What are the health problems they cause? Which one is more hazardous? Why?

6-What environmental problems do they cause?

Go back to the main page, hover over "Maps and Data" and click on "Interactive Map" and click contours and answer these questions. Note that the darker areas show higher levels of a pollutant. The red areas area the highest.

7-Where are the highest levels of ozone? What do you think the source of the ozone is in that area?

8-Where are the highest levels of PM 2.5? What do you think the source of the PM 2.5 is in that area?

Click on the link "World Air Quality" and answer the questions. Note the little flying arrows show wind direction.

9-Is there any place on the map where the pollution of one country might be carried to another on the wind flow? If so, where?

10-Is there any place on the map where pollution of one country might be carried over the Pacific or Atlantic oceans? If so, where?

Now, look at the world AQI ranking box. This is a compilation of today's air quality in major world cities.

11-What are the top 6 worse cities for air pollution?

Expand the list to see which cities have the cleanest air quality.

12-What two cities are listed as having the best air quality?

13-Now share your thoughts on this exercise. Were you surprised, fascinated, cynical, bored, interested? What was the most interesting thing you learned?
