Alice is an 83 year old female admitted to the psychiatric unit through the emergency room by her husband, John. John has been caring for Alice for the past 5 years. She was diagnosed with early stage dementia 8 years ago. John has been trying his best to care for Alice but it has become increasingly difficult. According to John, Alice has started to wander around the house so he has had to move their bedroom downstairs because he is afraid she could fall. She has become increasing agitated and aggressive, she has less moments of clarity, she needs increased assistance feeding herself and has become incontinent. John feels horrible about not being able to care for his wife but he is afraid that she is going to hurt herself or him. You are the nurse caring for Alice. You arrive on the unit for the day and you go meet Alice. Upon your initial assessment you find Alice in bed trying to climb over the rails and yelling about a fire. It takes you multiple minutes to re-orientate Alice to her surroundings.
