During the 16th Century reformation took place in the Western Church. Reformation was the basis of the division of the Western Church from Roman Catholicism. Protestantism came from reformation and division, which allowed for more freedom of religion. Two of the greatest influencers of Reformism were Martin Luther and John Calvin. Reformation had much effect on social, economic, and political effects. Martin Luther did not only want to attack the corruption of the Church but also wanted to look at the theology behind the problems, the root of it all. Luther believed that the pope had no say over the effects of purgatory, more ever the saints had no actual foundation in the gospel as they were appointed by the church, not by the word of God.
