Question

How did Lincoln's wartime measures aim to undermine the Confederacy's cultural, social, and political foundation? By suspending habeas corpus and enacting the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln freed all Confederate military prisoners in the North. He hoped this would set an example for the Confederacy and implored them to free both Union military prisoners and enslaved peoples. By suspending habeas corpus and enacting the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln sent a message that ordinary processes of law would not be enough to suppress the Confederate insurrection, undermine its supporters, and abolish slavery in the Confederacy; only the power of the executive branch could achieve these goals. By suspending habeas corpus and enacting the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln successfully freed all enslaved peoples within the Confederacy. Both of these measures undermined the Confederacy's cultural, social, and political foundation and significantly contributed to ending the Civil War.
