Many ERs that utilize a triage system fall into the triage process of having a triage just to check a box regarding having someone fill that role. Fewer ERs focus on the quality of triage which results in poorer patient experiences (Tavanger et al., 2019). The long-term outcome aiming to reduce average door-to-triage times aligns with a performance-based triage system as it allows nurses to improve ER flow and increase response times to critical patient issues. Decreased delays and wait times can improve patient outcomes by provided them with needed or desired treatment in less than that with an unorganized triage process. From this project, I can take away that even small changes can have a meaningful impact on patient outcomes and unit performance. I think I also learned how supportive leadership can be if you approach them with a well-prepared plan to improve the unit. I think within 6 months we will be able to reach or be close to reaching my long-term outcome of reducing door-to-triage times to less than 10 minutes. During the course of the small-scale change, I have already noticed a reduction in time. To get to that outcome I think it requires commitment to.
