Question 1.    Parker Corporation has issued 2,000 shares of common stock and 400 shares of preferred stock for a lump sum of $72,000 cash.

Instructions

(a)  Give the entry for the issuance assuming the par value of the common was $5 and the market value $30, and the par value of the preferred was $40 and the market value $50. (Each valuation is on a per share basis and there are ready markets for each stock.)

(b)  Give the entry for the issuance assuming the same facts as (a) above except the preferred stock has no ready market and the common stock has a market value of $25 per share.

Question 2.      Garr Co. issued $5,000,000 of 12%, 5-year convertible bonds on December 1, 2010 for $5,020,800 plus accrued interest. The bonds were dated April 1, 2010 with interest payable
April 1 and October 1. Bond premium is amortized each interest period on a straight-line basis. Garr Co. has a fiscal year end of September 30.

On October 1, 2011, $2,500,000 of these bonds were converted into 35,000 shares of $15 par common stock. Accrued interest was paid in cash at the time of conversion.

Instructions

(a)   Prepare the entry to record the interest expense at April 1, 2011. Assume that interest payable was credited when the bonds were issued (round to nearest dollar).

(b)   Prepare the entry to record the conversion on October 1, 2011. Assume that the entry to record amortization of the bond premium and interest payment has been made.

3.      Santana Corporation has 400,000 shares of common stock outstanding throughout 2010. In addition, the corporation has 5,000, 20-year, 7% bonds issued at par in 2008. Each $1,000 bond is convertible into 20 shares of common stock after 9/23/11. During the year 2010, the corporation earned $600,000 after deducting all expenses. The tax rate was 30%.

Question 4.      Agee Corp. acquired a 25% interest in Trent Co. on January 1, 2010, for $500,000. At that time, Trent had 1,000,000 shares of its $1 par common stock issued and outstanding. During 2010, Trent paid cash dividends of $160,000 and thereafter declared and issued a 5% common stock dividend when the market value was $2 per share. Trent's net income for 2010 was $360,000. What is the balance in Agee's investment account at the end of 2010?

5.      Sawyer Furniture Company concluded its first year of operations in which it made sales of $800,000, all on installment. Collections during the year from down payments and installments totaled $300,000. Purchases for the year totaled $400,000; the cost of merchandise on hand at the end of the year was $80,000.

Instructions
