Question
In an unfortunate scheduling mix-up, your doctor has set up an appointment for you to undergo a treadmill VO2max stress test...immediately after you are scheduled to donate some much- needed O-negative blood at a local blood drive. The blood drive staffers are sympathetic to your plight and offer to intravenously replace the 500 mL of blood that you donate with 500 mL of normal saline, so that at least your blood volume will stay the same and enable to you reach your normal maximal stroke volume of 105 mL/beat. Before you donated blood, your blood volume was 4.2 L, and your hemoglobin concentration was 15 g/dL of blood. And both before and after your stop at the blood drive, your exercising muscles are equally capable of efficiently extracting oxygen from the blood, resulting in a venous O2 content of 3 mL O2 per dL blood at maximal exercise
1. Calculate what your VO2max would have been without giving blood first. Show all steps and considerations in your calculations. (Assumptions: 1) given your age of 26 years old, your maximal heart rate is 190 beats/minute, and 2) arterial hemoglobin oxygen saturation is a normal, standard 98.5% at PO2 = 100 mmHg.)
2. Calculate what your arterial oxygen content will be after giving blood and receiving the saline replacement. (Arterial %sat and PO2 are still 98.5% and 100 mmHg, respectively.)
3. Calculate what your new VO2max will be after giving blood. Does this answer make sense? Why or why not?
