When carrying out a database search using BLAST with a protein coding gene as the query sequence, there are two possible approaches.

First, it is possible to query using the original DNA sequence.

Second, one could translate the coding DNA and query using the amino acid sequence of the encoded protein. Which approach is likely to be better? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
