Nurses should look at "the annual National Household Survey to track progress in personal disaster preparedness.... measures the public's degree of preparedness for the hazards they are likely to face.... the public's awareness, attitudes and experiences that can motivate actions to prepare." (FEMA, 2022). Most recently, South Carolina has been faced with fighting wildfires throughout the state. Greenville and Pickens counties are greatly affected by wildfires. "Officials ordered mandatory evacuations in Greenville and Pickens Counties after two wildfires exploded in size on Tuesday." (McCreless, 2025). The community nurse/public health nurse should have started the mitigation process as it's too late to prevent the wildfire from burning certain areas. Mitigation is "the process or result of making something less severe, dangerous, painful, harsh, or damaging." (Merriam-Webster.com Dictionary, 2025). In the mitigation stage the community nurse should assess "the community demographics and available resources." (Ochs, R., Roper, S., et al, 2024). If the wildfire starts to spread in the direction of other homes, the community nurse and his/her organization should prevent harm to residents by having him/her be prepared as to what evacuation route should be taken and store any valuables in a storage (if possible) far away from the wildfire's path
