You are seeing Ms. Garcia, a 33-year-old female with chronic ulcerative colitis, who is status post total proctocolectomy with an end ileostomy. This is your first postoperative visit with her. For this education visit, you will discuss and/or demonstrate a pouching system change for Ms. Garcia that will include measuring the stoma, preparing the pouching system, placing it on the abdomen, and closing the end of the pouch. You will also discuss and/or demonstrate when and how to empty the pouching system. Ms. Garcia has questions about living with a stoma. You will discuss lifestyle considerations and adaptations that may need to be addressed when living with an ileostomy. Presentation Elements Use the following guided questions to help you record. Walk through the steps of changing a pouching system keeping in mind how you would explain this to the patient in the case study. Be creative on how you demonstrate this to the patient. If you have access to a pouching system, you can use that. To represent the stoma, use a small object or draw it on paper. Discuss three or more considerations or lifestyle adaptations your patient may need to address when living with a stoma.
