Question

Lindsay is a 34-year-old female who reported to the emergency department (ED) with thoughts of wanting to kill herself. She has a history of anxiety, bipolar disorder, polysubstance abuse, and borderline personality disorder. Lindsay is well known to the hospital staff from her multiple admissions, history of leaving against medical advice (AMA), and disruptive, and drug-seeking behaviors. On previous visits, to the emergency room Lindsay would complain of auditory hallucinations, although she has not been seen responding to internal stimuli when she believes she is not being observed. Lindsay has a history of methamphetamine abuse with the last positive test two weeks ago. She was seen in the ED three times in the previous month. On the second visit, Lindsay was disruptive to the ED and left twice AMA before being picked up by the police and returned to the hospital by the authorities. A week after this incident, Lindsay was prescribed antibiotics for cellulitis due to a car accident the week prior and a urinary tract infection (UTI). Lindsay was admitted to the medical unit this morning for treatment of her cellulitis. A psychiatric consult was played due to her suicidal statements at admission.
