Question

"In the United States, medical errors account for more than 250,000 deaths a year, making it the third leading cause of death" (Garcia, 2019). There are many triggers that aid in stress and burnout of nurses that will eventually cause them to compromise patient care and safety, and something like the first sentence of my post can happen. Some common causes that lead to burnouts are high workload, long working hours, shortages in staffing, unhealthy work environment, poor work- life balance, exposure to traumatic events, and emotional demands of patient care. These mentioned along with many others not only at some point will begin to affect the nurse in their job but also the emotional, physical, and mental health of said nurse. As a charge nurse, I would want to be well educated on the signs of overstress, but also find ways to prevent burnout on all the nurses. Ways to help are to lessen the staff shortages by guaranteeing the unit in question is adequately staffed to achieve patient care loads. Turn an unhealthy work environment to a positive and healthy one by encouraging open communication, teamwork, and shared respect among staff members. These are only just a few examples of what a nurse manager can do, also what may help too is having a staff meeting where they can openly talk over what can be done to lessen the stressors and provide great and safe patient care. As stated in Yoder-Wise, the nurse manager's job "is to mitigate stress so that frontline staff can deliver the highest-quality care" (2023).
