Scenario for "Theories of Organizational Life" class

  1. You are the Board of Directors in charge of setting up a new hospital in one of the Ontario communities that will open in late 2022.
  2. It's 2021 so COVID is still a big issue in healthcare. In fact, the funds were made available to set up a new hospital as part of a plan to ease the burden on hospitals in the community that neared their breaking points due to the pandemic. Because the hospital was set up to provide immediate relief for the capacity challenges being faced across the province as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, only critical care (ICU) and medicine beds will be open to bring relief to the community, as well as the province's overstretched health system.
  3. The hospital will eventually (when the pandemic is over) open up other parts like the emergency department, the maternity ward, the mental health space.

Your collective task is to develop:

  • Mission, vision, and values of your hospital
  • Strategic goals and initiatives for the next 4-5 of years (you can have short-term and long-term goals and initiatives)
  • Given your mission/vision/values and strategic priorities, consider the following:
    • Organizational structure that will help you achieve your strategic goals and initiatives
    • Organizational systems you need to build to achieve your strategic goals and initiatives
    • Organizational culture that you want to foster
  • Operational considerations you need to make to achieve all of the above
