The rate of increase reported among women be? tween 1990 and 1994 (89%) was more than three times the increase reported among men (29%).2 AIDS continues to increase among women of color, with 1994 rates double those of Hispanic/Latina women and 17 times those among white women.2 Increasingly, women are acquiring human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) heterosexually, with cases attributable to heterosexual contact growing in 1994 by 146%, as compared with 59% AIDS incidence growth among women who use injectable drugs.2 By 1995, HIV infection had become the third leading cause of death among all U.S. women ages 25-44 years and the leading cause of death among African-American women of this age group.3 Key areas in which cohort studies have contributed to an understanding of the natural history of HIV infection.
