The “Older Than Dirt” potting soil company uses a machine to fill 40-pound bags of enriched potting soil. The machine has a process standard deviation of about 6 ounces. For years managers have just assumed that if the bags averaged 40 pounds each, nobody would complain. Now, a new industry group wants to set limits on what can be called a“40-pound” bag of dirt: a bag must weigh at least 39 pounds, 8 ounces and no more than 40 pounds, 8 ounces, though heavy bags can still be counted as good. At least no one but Joe Dirt, Jr., the company president, complains when the bags are a little too full!

1) The “Older Than Dirt” potting soil company (see the above question) uses a machine that is not precise enough to consistently meet the specs for filling 40-pound bags of enriched potting soil. Joe Dirt, III, the company marketing director, has suggested that manufacturing set the filling machine to a target of 40 pounds, 10 ounces in order to reduce the number of light bags that his customers will reject. The machine still has a process standard deviation of about 6 ounces.

a) Now, which is the appropriate type of ratio for this process as currently configured: Cpk, Cp, CPL, or CPU? Why?

b) Given the answer to (a), what is the ratio for the machine when bagging 40-pound bags, on average?

c) How many bags will not meet specifications even while the process is in control?

d) Joe Dirt, Jr., company president, is concerned about the extra dirt that they are giving away by overfilling. Can you estimate the percentage? Why is it being given away?
