The Nurses' Health Study (NHS) The Nurses' Health Study (NHS) is an ongoing study of U.S. nurses. The original focus of the study was on contraceptive methods, smoking, cancer, and heart disease, but has expanded over time to include research on many other lifestyle factors, behaviors, personal characteristics, and more than 30 diseases. The investigators designed a case-control study, within the NHS larger study, to examine the association between premenopausal plasma osteoprotegerin (OPG) and breast cancer. OPG is a cytokine receptor used as a marker of breast carcinogenesis. Investigators hypothesize that higher levels of OPG in blood will be associated with lower risk of breast cancer (Kotsopoulos et al. 2020). A total of 151 cases and 443 controls were included in the study. From the cases, 75 had higher OPG levels while 76 had lower OPG levels. From the controls, 223 had higher OPG levels and 220 had lower OPG levels.
