Question

An example of a violation of the Texas Nurse Practice Act would be a nurse mistakenly administering Hydralazine, a blood pressure medication, to the wrong post-operative patient who had no history of hypertension. As a result, the patient experienced hypotension and dizziness. The nurse failed to report or document the error, which was only discovered several hours later by another nurse. This incident violated several standards of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, including the requirement to promote a safe environment, accurately document nursing care, and ensure proper medication administration practices. To address the violation, I would immediately report the error, ensure the patient receives appropriate care, and complete all required documentation, including an incident report. Some ideas for remediation include participating in medication safety training and reviewing institutional policies on high-alert medications. Using my CliftonStrengths, I would utilize my Futuristic strength to envision and propose safer medication administration systems, and apply Strategic thinking to analyze and correct process gaps.
