Ken is becoming reliant on pain medicine over time to be able to function at his work. Pain medicine is only a temporary solution to suppress the pain. Some CAMs provide a lengthier solution. Hypnosis is a CAM that has been proven to reduce chronic back pain (Sarafino and Smith, 2022). It is true, however, that Ken's lower back pain will be reduced based on how susceptible, or responsive, he is to hypnotic treatment. The more suggestible Ken is to the treatment the more effective psychological treatments will be for him (Sarafino and Smith, 2022). Physical therapy is an effective method for treating chronic pains. Ken would be able to relieve his pain over the course of several sessions while also strengthening his muscles to support that area of his body to prevent future pain (Sarafino and Smith, 2022). Physical therapy is also a broad treatment to acute and chronic pain. The doctor would be able to create a special exercise program, specifically for Ken, that will increase flexibility and strength while also being able to provide massages and heat treatment for the pain (Sarafino and Smith, 2022). Many people after serious accidents or surgeries get referrals to physical therapy.
