Communicating in the workplace coupled with advances in technology provides a vast array of communication outlets. Various forms include formal writing, cell phones, pagers, e-mail, snail mail, and a culmination of social media networks. As individuals and businesses become saturated with these various communication options proper writing styles, techniques, and the portrayal of message intent can mislead the receiver on the contents meaning. Along with these advances the information age leads to the advent of new organizations.
Businesses of the 21st century include remote teams, virtual teams, and networks. As the network becomes the intangible representation of how individuals work with one another in achieving goals, he or she must hone his or her interpersonal communication and team skills within this organizational structure (Roebuck, 2006, p. xvi). As texting and social media networks invade homes and businesses across the globe more emphasis extends into the arena of formal writing that lacks in 80% of businesses (Roebuck, 2006, p. xiii).
