Question

The systems approach is important in public health practice because this involves broadening strategic thinking to help consider critical factors to the public health issue at hand. A public health issue that is being addressed by my practicum organization is the current tracking of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) admissions within the local hospitals. RSV is not a reportable disease that needs to be reported to the health department however it can become deadly in children and elderly if not treated properly. Some components and interconnections that make up the larger system involved with this issue involve the local hospitals volunteering to report the hospital admissions weekly to help provide a number of how many people within the community are being impacted with RSV. This form of investigator-clinic staff collaboration, attention to system factors, and focus on creative solutions can inform research and care around implementing novel interventions in established clinical systems (Shrier,2020) The key stakeholders within this system are infectious disease nurses at each hospital and the epidemiologist is in contact with the hospitals to help promote the importance of reporting RSV weekly.
