GT was recently seen in your office for symptoms of myocardial ischemia. As part of her work up a lipid panel was ordered. The total lipid level was elevated with most of that level consisting of an elevated High-density lipid (HDL)and a below normal low-density lipid (LDL) level. You advise GT to: Continue her diet and everything she is doing as this is ideal since HDLs are cardioprotective in that they transport cholesterol from tissues to liver. Modify her diet and increase her statin as this is an undesirable result since LDLs should be at least normal or higher as they transport cholesterol from the tissue to the liver. Modify her diet so that her HDL and LDL levels are even as this will help to maintain a balance of cholesterol being transported to and from the liver. The combination doesn't matter they are equally as harmful and diet modification is absolutely necessary to reduce the total lipid level.
