A nurse should instruct clients to avoid sun exposure when possible, particularly between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm. A broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15 with protection against UVA and UVB rays is recommended for most individuals, with a minimum of SPF 30 in individuals with sensitive skin. Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before exposure to the sun to allow the formation of a protective film on the skin. After swimming or sweating, all sunscreens should be reapplied. Even water-resistant sunscreen must be reapplied after swimming. Sunscreen application should be repeated at least every 2 hours when outdoors. Since exposure to UV radiation occurs in tanning beds, they should also be avoided. Protective hats, long-sleeved clothing, and umbrellas should be used when possible to limit exposure to dangerous UV radiation.
