Assignment:
Social workers might be asked to contribute to an agency's website or newsletter as a way of communicating with clients and groups in the community. Such contributions can consist of reports on a specific intervention, policy, or topic, or may include reflections on lived experiences.
Because social workers regularly speak alone with clients without supervision, self-reflection must serve as a management tool for informing practice. Sharing insights from personal reflections can provide helpful information to colleagues, clients, and groups who might benefit from such communication.
Select an example of a population or type of group that you might serve as a social worker in your area. You may select a group that includes individuals who share a common demographic, are facing a similar social issue, need similar interventions, or represent the intersectionality of multiple groups.
In peer-reviewed or professional articles on the intersectionality of bias, power, and privilege in group social work with the special needs group. Examples of such sources may include academic articles, case studies, or excerpts from social work literature. Consider how the findings of your review of professional literature compare with your lived experience.
In a blog or newsletter that could be used on an agency's website to communicate with clients and community members that reflects on the understanding of intersectionality and bias related to group social work at the agency.
- Summarize the concept of intersectionality and its relevance to social work. Define key terms such as bias, power, and privilege, and give examples of how these concepts might come up in group work with the special needs population
- Reflect on how various factors, such as race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc., have intersected to shape your personal experiences of bias, power, and privilege. Describe how your personal experiences have influenced your perceptions of working with different populations in your path to becoming a social worker.
- Explain how personal experiences can affect social workers' interactions with clients and colleagues and how to minimize risks of biases affecting group work.
