The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) can vary based on the population and the time period considered.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of late 2021, the CFR in the U.S. was approximately 1.6% (CDC, 2021). The Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) is generally lower than the CFR because it includes all infections, not just confirmed cases. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) estimated the IFR for COVID-19 in the U.S. to be around 0.5% (Meyerowitz-Katz & Merone, 2020).
