Statistical significance is a reserved term in research. It is only used to describe research results that exceed the probability of chance. When researchers claim to have statistically significant results, it means they believe their results would happen again if they did their experiment again. In comparison, the term significant is used often in situations that have nothing to do with research (e.g., "she thought that was a significant change in his attitude").
