Standardized data entry improves patient safety by keeping a collection of patient data in one specific place which provides immediate and easy access. With the use of technology, it allows for prompts to pop up on the screen if there is a medication which may have components to a patient's allergies, or one that may be contraindicated with other medications. Having access to patients medical records allows practitioners to see what is in their records and make communication with other practitioners or consultants easier, collaborating and making decisions on the best outcome for patients. In my line of practice, we deal with patients who have multiple complex issues. This can make it very difficult to obtain necessary information needed to present a clear picture. Having access to electronic medical records allows the clinicians to explore the various types of medical conditions associated with that one patient and providing a clear picture on how to best treat this individual. We deal with a lot head trauma, PTSD, and mental illness, so patients may not always remember medical history, medications, past treatments, etc. Having standardized data entry allows medical records to be available all in one place.
