Aerobic metabolism during exercise is the topic for this module, so let's talk about aerobic fitness (VO2max). We know th file that VO2max (relative, taking body weight into account, not absolute which is mis-leading as it does not account for body weight) increases in males more than females as they grow up (somatic maturation). Keep in mind this idea of increased VO2 is NOT in response to training, but just to growing up. Kids VO2max ALSO improves with training.

The assignment is to distinguish between the mechanisms responsible for increased VO2max through somatic maturation vs traditional exercise.

Describe in detail why/how VO2max goes up (and exactly what physiological mechanisms in the body are responsible for this) as kids grow as well as when kids do aerobic exercise training.
