Assignment -
Case - You are an administrator for a world-renowned university. Your school is known for being academically rigorous and on the cutting edge of research. However, it is also well-known for its countercultural character, and there is a long and storied tradition for students to protest against what they see as injustices, inequalities or violations of rights in society. Recently, politics in the United States have become much more polarized than in previous decades. As a result, a number of highly controversial "populist" leaders have arisen, often supported by right-wing talkshow hosts. This wouldn't be a problem, but now the so-called "Alt-Right" feels emboldened to voice their opinions in society. The Alt-Right supports policies that disadvantage people of color, the poor, people born outside of the U.S., women and sexual minorities (LGBTQ persons). Some even chant white supremacist messages at their rallies and call for the U.S. to be a nation only for white people. The political climate has encouraged the Alt-Right to be more bold in speaking out, having protests and rallies and spreading their messages of hate. At a recent rally in Charlottesville, VA, some Alt-Right protestors brutally beat a black man with poles, others assembled on the University of Virginia with (tiki) torches in the middle of the night, and one person used his car to kill anti-protestors. The failure of the President to speak out against this violence and aggression has only made things worse. Now, the Alt-Right has targeted your city, and specifically your university. Because your school is well-known for its leftist character, Alt-Right groups have begun staging rallies in your city, with the apparent purpose of provoking "liberals" into violence. Some of the residents in your city have begun fighting back, even threatening violence against these Alt-Right protestors (and sometimes actually using violence). The College Republicans club on campus has decided recently to invite some highly controversial Alt-Right-sympathetic speakers to campus. You anticipate that the presence of these speakers will incite many students, and possibly other people in the community, to protest, and that these protests may become violent. You have on your desk the applications required for these speakers to speak out on campus. If you sign off on them, the speakers will come, there will be mass-protests, and they may result in property damage or even injury. If you do not sign off on them, you will be making a statement that your university limits what can be considered free speech.
What do you do? Please solve the above case using one of the four case study resolution models presented in class.
