Showing compassion and understanding is extremely important for situations such as this. The patient is clearly in need of medical help as there is an infection. Secondly, the patient's emotional and psychological health is also a significant concern. A medical assistant will need to have the patient understand that their health is of the utmost importance, and allowing the physician to know exactly what has been occurring is needed so that he can give the patient the best care possible. Involving the patient's parents may be necessary to give the patient the help they need. It is a very sensitive situation; however, the patient's health and well-being are what is most important. Handling this situation with compassion and understanding can hopefully allow the patient to develop trust in the care that they will be receiving. On a personal level, I have accompanied a friend to receive her cancer treatments/infusions within the last several months. She is very sensitive to having other people know about her cancer diagnosis (aside from the medical staff). I was so pleased with the professionalism of the clinic staff as they explained to her that her information was private and that no one else needed to.
