A 74-year-old older adult was admitted to the emergency department(ED) with shortness of breath and lethargy. No known drug or foodallergies. History of gout, falls, and loss of appetite. Height is 5'3" andcurrent weight is 98 pounds (BMI 17.4). Patient reports being thirsty.Examination reveals dry oral mucosa, BP 90/50 mmHg, pulse 122beats/min, temperature 100.1° F (temporal); SpO2 88% on room air, Pain0/10. Scant dark urine present. Bowel sounds normoactive in allaquadrants. Skin is intact. The patient is started on intravenous (IV) fluids.
