Shared governance is an organizational design in which the governance of an organization is "shared among board members, nurses, physicians, and management" to empower decision-making employees, especially nurses (Marquis, 2017, p. 308). Nurses have more control and a say in the decision-making process, promoting responsibility and accountability. It fosters communication and collaboration within the interprofessional healthcare team. Each member can engage by contributing their clinical expertise and experience when making the final decision towards improving patient care and outcomes. In contrast to chaos, shared governance has shown positive results, including an improved staff understanding of challenges faced by each discipline, "improved staff communication, problem-solving, patient outcomes, and staff satisfaction" (Marquis, 2017, p. 309). An positive and ideal work environment should have or strive for all these positive characteristics to ensure staff feel empowered and the increase the quality of care patients receive.
