Social Work:

Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems

As you know, we are shaped by our biopsychosocial environment, and some things we experience have a life-long impact - both positive and negative. Culture is significant part of someone's background - it shapes beliefs and values, and it may even go further by instilling expectations for our adult relationships and endeavors.

For girls who grew up in a patriarchal society, once an adult, that female may be drawn to college and a career - but because of her cultural environment, she is unsure about pursing either one. She comes to you as a client, torn between applying to college and pursing her dream of being a pediatrician, and following in more culturally traditional footsteps that begin and end with motherhood. What are some of the conversations you might have with her to encourage - or discourage - her dreams?
