Question

A patient is prescribed metronidazole (Flagyl) for a sexually transmitted infection. What information would be most important to tell this patient about this medication?

Do NOT eat any food or medications that contain calcium, iron, or magnesium, as they will bind to metronidazole and prevent absorption in the GI tract. Take metronidazole with at least 6 eight ounce glasses of water a day to avoid the development of kidney stones. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun and use sun screen while taking metronidazole, as it predisposes you to sun burn and photosensitivity. Do NOT drink alcohol while taking metronidazole as it can result in severe nausea and vomiting.
