Scenario 1: Maria, 24 years old, came to Australia from the Philippines after her marriage to a 35-year-old Australian businessman. Maria only knew her spouse in Australia. She had no social support structure or family and was completely isolated. Her spouse became physically and mentally abusive once she arrived. He controlled her life, forbidding her from leaving the house, working, or having any autonomy. Maria was beaten and threatened with deportation if she resisted.
